KELOWNA TEASER

After coming home from Kelowna this afternoon and looking through all of my pictures, I feel as though I'm going to have to split my trip into several different posts. In the meantime, I thought I would give you guys a small taste of what I experienced in beautiful British Columbia through some of my favourite shots of the weekend.

I had such an incredible time in Kelowna, celebrating a friend's wedding, visiting with old friends, tasting local wines and exploring vineyards, and boating and swimming on Lake Okanagan. It was an amazing trip.

DOG DAYS

Last week/ weekend consisted of me drinking my weight in sangria and sunbathing with some of my best girlfriends. It's been so nice to have some down time with these girls.

While lounging on party island, we were talking about how much we love Winnipeg and our province.  After graduating, every single one of us had sincere intentions of moving away- Vancouver, Australia, Calgary and New York City were just some of our hopeful future homes. Some of us moved for a few years but inevitably, we are all back in Winnipeg.

Now, this isn't a bad thing. Quite the opposite, actually. We talked about how, although Winnipeg isn't exactly the hub for our dream jobs of being investment bankers, lifestyle magazine editors and careers in foreign policy- we all agreed that this city has a lot of opportunity and luxuries that many other cities lack.

We have the luxury of driving 1-4 hours any direction and finding breath taking freshwater lakes. Ask anyone from Winnipeg what they're plans are for the weekend and chances are it'll be: Lake of the Woods, Clear Lake, Lac du Bonnet, Grand Beach or Victoria Beach. Each of these places has a unique charm about them.

I'm off to Boston tomorrow, so I hope to come back with some great pictures and hopefully a mini weekend city guide! Stay tuned!

THE FIFTY ETC.

So I've become a pretty great cook over the years. I can 'Iron Chef' my way through most kitchens with  random ingredients, making some sort of dish that will satisfy just about anyone. I hate recipes. Which is probably why I've avoided trying my hand at baking- until two weeks ago.

On a long drive back from the cabin, my boyfriend and I were talking about my Fifty list. I've realized that several things on the list have changed since I first wrote it last September. Time to update it, I thought, eventually. But going through the list made me realize that - a) time flies, and b) I should probably get on top of this list before I, you know, die.

So I made a goal for myself this summer in order to knock at least one thing off of my Fifty list: become a solid baker.

I figured taking baby steps was a smart way to approach the world of baking, so my first try was at making chocolate chip cookies. They were awesome! The confidence I gained from making the cookies got me excited to try something different. Organic carrot cake and blueberry banana muffins followed. Both received rave reviews from the boyfriend and friends. Woo!

I decided to make my carrot cake with double the icing: one cup of butter, two blocks of cream cheese & eight cups of icing sugar- eff ya.

THAT BOND

No two adoption stories are ever the same. Mine is no exception. I have no recollection of the day my parents told me I was adopted, it's always been a normal thing for me- one of the things that makes me, me.

I met my birthmother thirteen years ago- when I was thirteen years old, and it was such a blessing. I'll never forget the feeling of seeing someone who looks like me. It was startling, and awesome.

Although she lives nearly 700 miles away, whenever we have the chance to connect, it's always quite special.

I hadn't seen her in over a year, but last night we sat at Stella's for hours catching up on every aspect of our lives. We've both had a lot of change happen in our lives over the past three months and it was so nice to have a good old heart-to-heart, not really as mother and daughter, but more so friends that share an incredibly strong bond.

Her laugh is probably my favourite thing about her. It sounds exactly like mine.

SEGOVIA

Well I'm celebrating my birthday this weekend. Earlier in the week I went to my favourite restaurant with some of my favourite girls and drank some of my favourite wine. Who am I kidding- all wine is my favourite wine.

I went to Segovia on the corner of Osborne and Stradbrooke. If you've never been, it's a tapas style restaurant with fabulous cuisine, wine and atmosphere. At Segovia, they are passionate about fine ingredients and creating an unparalleled experience. Love that this place is mere blocks from my place.

I'll apologize in advance for the shizzy photos, my iphone is bull in low light. Just wanted to update you guys with a quick post!

xo & have a great weekend,

Monique

CROATIA TO WINNIPEG

Over the weekend I had the amazing opportunity to interview "Ivana Katic" - I've changed her name at her request. In 1991, Katic was sixteen years old and in the middle of a horrific civil war in former Yugolsavia. For four years, Katic lived in unimaginable fear and chaos. Although this was an assignment for my journalism class, I really wanted to share her powerful story with you.
___________________________________________

“My mother would sit at her sewing machine, weeping as she stitched military uniforms, her tears falling into the material. She told me that men were going to die in those uniforms,” said Ivana Katic, who was sixteen when the civil war began in former Yugoslavia in 1991.

Katic's family owned a boutique and were commissioned by Croatian forces to produce uniforms for soldiers.

“It eventually bankrupted our family's business because inflation was so high. By the time the government would pay us, say thirty or sixty days later, there would be no money to pay our workers- no money for our family.”

At the age of sixteen, Katic's world changed and remembers the moment vividly. “I was playing chess outside on a bench, wearing shorts and these clog shoes. All of a sudden a plane flew by, so low and so loud. I ran home, I remember ditching my clogs I was in such a panic. It was human instinct. That was the day that Serbia invaded us.” said Katic.

From that day forward, Katic spent the next four years living in fear. She remembers the chaos and mayhem. Women were hunted, gathered in gymnasiums and raped. This was Katic's reality, and every time the siren blared, she would run desperately to the nearest place to hide in a bunker for hours -sometimes days. An instinct that would stay with her, even after moving to Canada, after the war had ended.

“For years, and still sometimes now, whenever I hear loud noises or planes, I'll scan the area to find the nearest safe place.” said Katic.

Katic's father became increasingly violent towards her throughout the years of the war. The last experience left Katic severely concussed and put her in the hospital. “It was his way of coping with what was happening.” said Katic.

Depressed and desperate to escape, that last experience with her father pushed Katic to move to Canada. With seven hundred dollars and two suitcases, one filled with clothes, the other packed with photos and memories, Katic spent the day after her twentieth birthday on a plane to Winnipeg. She hardly spoke a word of english.

“It was a struggle, you know. I couldn't call a friend up and say that I needed to borrow money- because I had no one to call. I would go to Subway and steal soda crackers to make ketchup sandwiches. I was in survival mode.” said Katic.

Katic still struggles with the scars of war. Since coming to Canada, Katic has had roller coaster years of depression, substance abuse and rehab. For several years, she dated and lived with a Canadian soldier in Shilo, Manitoba. Remembrance Day has always made Katic incredibly grateful for her freedom as a Canadian.

Today, Katic works two jobs and attends weekly addiction and therapy meetings to keep herself in check. She is happy, sober and considers the friends she has made in Canada to be her family.

“One of the happiest days of my life was when I became a Canadian. Out of 150 people, the judge picked my story to share with everyone. It was a really proud moment for me.” said Katic.

It has been nearly nine years since Katic has returned to her city of Zagreb. She has long forgiven her father and on Christmas day Katic will board a plane to reconnect with her family, friends and the place she calls home.

PORTFOLIO

At the beginning of 2011, I self-published a portfolio of works that I am most proud of. I included a mix of art, photographs, writing and other random creative things that make me happy. The thing I love most about creating is the process, never the end result. Well, sometimes the end result. ;) However, I think that creative types should compile their labours of love.

I know that in just a few short months I'll have another pile of work I'll want to gather up and publish.

If you're interested in making your own book I would highly suggest Blurb. This company lets you be the artist when it comes to creating your book. They are InDesign and Photoshop friendly.

PEARL COLLAR

Geri Hirsch is one of my favourite bloggers. She has stood the test of (online) time and has positioned herself as one of the top fashion bloggers. Her blog, Because I'm Addicted, is amazing. It's a glorious mashup of DIY's, outfit inspirations, recipes and other random goodness.

I had to share this adorable DIY. Not sure when I'll find the time to sit down and do it, but at least it's here waiting for me.

For now, I'm going to join in on the Jets fever with my girlfriends and be a puck bunny for the day. Did you just hear that? Yup, that was the sound of me jumping. On the bandwagon.

YES PLEASE

I've always wanted to spend a summer abroad, immersing myself in a new culture, learning a new language and most importantly making new friends.

Barcelona has been at the top of my travel list for several years (along with Portugal, India and Indonesia). The architecture is incredible and the Spanish lifestyle as a whole, from what I've heard, suits my personality quite well: enjoy the simplest pleasures in life; friends, food, drink and laughs.

Crossing my fingers that the summer of 2012 has something amazing in store for me.

INFLUENCERS

I've loved this short documentary for a long time. And since the subject of influencers has recently come up in my public relations class, I thought I would share this little goody with you all.

I love documentaries that explore the realm of creativity.

Happy Thursday, everyone!

CORN FIELDS

I got lost in a beautiful maze of corn tonight. It served as the perfect way to unwind after a semi stressful (half) week of deadlines.

If you've never explored A Maze in Corn, I highly suggest you do so.

It is so much more than a corn field.

Clydesdale horses clip-clop around, pulling happy hay riders. They have concession stands, restrooms, and a haunted forest. There are bonfires available for rent- they even provide the propane and firewood! You can cuddle lambs, kittens, piglets, goats and even snuggle with a calf named Doug.

Hallowe'en is only a few weeks away and A Maze in Corn has a cozy pumpkin patch. I'll be going back within the next week - I missed out on the hay ride today and I also need to snag my Jack-0-Lantern!

Cheers!
